Welcome to the track! We run, gallop, hop, crab walk, bear crawl, and “Simon says ____” laps around this room every day. (My personal favorite is when “Simon says savasana” and my toddler and I lie flat on the floor for a minute. Can I get an Amen?!).
I think that’s why I haven’t been able to bring myself to buy chairs for this room yet. It was designed to be our dining room. It will, one day, assume that role. But until then it’s our track.

In a lot of houses, the dining room has significant molding; be it on the walls, the ceiling, or both. There’s nothing at all wrong with that. We just didn’t want a lot of wall molding in our home and planned to install beams on the ceiling in our living room, so we didn’t want molding on the dining room ceiling. Instead, we opted for a statement hardwood installation. It’s 3 1/4″ white oak laid in a herringbone pattern, sanded, and finished with a clear finish. The color beautifully compliments the un-stained cedar beams in our living room and the variety of wood tones between it and the hardwood floor creates richness. No molding needed. We absolutely love it!
The ceiling also contributes to the neutral pallet we were trying to create for our high contrast, black, dining furniture and lighting. The black paint on the window trim just ties it all together.

What do you think? Yay or nay on the hardwood ceiling? Is it something you would try in your own house? I’d love to hear from you!
